CHASING BABY TARPON PUERTO RICO STYLE

Just wanted to touch base this morning and say hello. It’s going to be a quick turnaround for me. I just returned from hosting a group of Frontiers friends who took on the challenge of baby tarpon fishing in Puerto Rico, and now I’m heading out for three weeks of hosted trips in my favorite country, Argentina.

Back to the tarpon trip — we fished out of No Name Lodge, which is quickly gaining a reputation as the place to go if tarpon and permit are your game. Puerto Rico is easy to get to, with no customs or immigration to contend with. The lodge is very comfortable and offers a unique program, great guides, and excellent boats. Sue, our hostess, was absolutely on top of everything. Dinners were either pizza and wings at the lodge or outings to nearby local restaurants, where we enjoyed a variety of menus.

Our guides mentioned that we weren’t seeing a lot of rolling fish, but from my perspective, I was more than satisfied with the number of shots we had each day. Several fish were jumped daily. Steve Binnick had a good week, jumping fish up to forty pounds, and he was lucky enough to land a huge mangrove snapper. Bill and Donna Scott put the hurt on several good fish, including some snook. All in all, I saw more than enough to know I’ll be returning next February to host another group of friends.

Daytime temperatures were a comfortable eighty degrees, while back home my office was talking about single-digit numbers. If you like warm weather, you’ll love Puerto Rico in February. This is a small operation and it fills up quickly, so if you’re interested in joining me next year, please contact Hank Ingram at Frontiers at 1-800-245-1950.

Looking for another adventure? I’ll be heading to Mexico from June 4–11 with a few friends to explore the fishing in the lower Espiritu Santo Bay. Friends of Frontiers have purchased an existing lodge there and upgraded the accommodations. This is grand slam territory, and I plan to photograph both the lodge and the fishing. I’ve heard this is a prolific permit environment. It’s a safe destination, far removed from some of the problems we hear about in the news. I’m truly excited about the opportunity, so if you’re interested, contact Hank at Frontiers at 1-800-245-1950. And I should add that Hank will also be joining us on the trip.

One last thing — our guiding schedule here on Fishing Creek is filling up quickly. If you’re planning a visit, please call Susie at 570-925-2392 to confirm your guiding dates.

Let’s stay in touch, and thanks for taking a look.

Regards,Barry
